Quick answer: outside Japan, every Nintendo Switch 2 is the same multi-language model, whether a UAE shop calls it the "UAE version" or the "international version". The one to avoid is the cheaper Japanese-language (Japan only) model: it only runs in Japanese and only accepts Nintendo Accounts set to Japan.
The two Switch 2 models
| Multi-language model | Japanese-language model (Japan only) | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it's sold | Everywhere outside Japan, and on the My Nintendo Store in Japan | General retailers in Japan |
| System language | Choose your language, including English | Japanese only |
| Nintendo Account | Accounts from any country or region | Only accounts with country/region set to Japan |
| Nintendo eShop | Your account's own eShop | Japanese eShop only |
| Game cards from outside Japan | Work normally | Nintendo says it can't guarantee they will work |
Nintendo created the Japan-only model as a cheaper console for the Japanese market, which is why it sometimes appears in the Gulf at a lower price. For an English-speaking player in the UAE it is the wrong console.
"UAE version" vs "international version": what actually differs
Both are the multi-language console, so games, language options and online play are the same. The practical differences are:
- Warranty: ask who honours it in the UAE. A unit imported by a reseller may only have the seller's own warranty.
- Power plug: UAE sockets are the three-pin Type G. A US or European unit needs an adapter or a local charger.
- Box and manuals: the packaging language and included leaflets can vary by market.
Game cards, Game-Key Cards and codes in the box
Switch 2 games come in three physical formats, and we state the format on every listing:
- Full game on game card: the whole game is on the card, like a classic cartridge.
- Game-Key Card: the card unlocks a download of the game. You need an internet connection for the first download, and the card stays in the console while you play.
- Code in box: the box holds a Nintendo eShop download code instead of a card.

Do Nintendo Switch 1 games work on Switch 2?
Most do: Switch 2 plays the large majority of original Switch game cards. Some titles also have a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition with better visuals and performance, such as Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. Our Nintendo Switch games collection lists 260+ bestsellers.
eShop cards and digital purchases
Digital purchases and eShop credit follow your Nintendo Account's country or region. Before you buy an eShop card or a code-in-box game, check that it matches the region your account is set to.
Switch 2 UAE FAQ
Is there a region lock on the Switch 2?
Only on the Japanese-language model sold in Japan, which is limited to Japanese accounts and the Japanese eShop. The multi-language model sold everywhere else accepts accounts from any region.
Can I change the Japan-only Switch 2 to English?
No. Japanese is the only system language on that model.
Which Switch 2 should I buy in Dubai?
The multi-language model, from a seller who tells you clearly who provides the warranty in the UAE.
